ALBANY, Ga. – Starting their spring break on the road, the Nova Southeastern softball team split a pair of games with the Albany State Rams on Tuesday evening at Golden Rams Field. The Rams used a walk-off 5-4 win to take the first game, before the Sharks' offense showed their strength to earn a 7-2 win in the nightcap.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE):

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 2ND | The Sharks were the first to reach the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead. Leadoff batter
Miriam Schmoll doubled to left field and a sacrifice bunt by
Lexie Storrer advanced her to third before a groundout by
Sydney Casteel was just enough to bring her home.
BOTTOM 2ND | Albany State tied things up the next half inning, as Aryn McGowan homered.
TOP 5TH | With
Tia Williams on first after drawing a walk, a
Sydney Lageyre single allowed her to make it all the way to third to put runners on the corners. The next batter,
Suka Van Gurp, scored both baserunners with a single to right field to give the Sharks a 3-1 advantage. After a fly out by
Aubry Hernandez advanced Van Gurp to second, an RBI-double by Schmoll plated Van Gurp, pushing the Sharks out to a 4-1 edge.
BOTTOM 5TH | The Rams cut the Sharks' deficit to one, 4-3, in the bottom half of the inning, using an RBI-triple and an RBI-single.
BOTTOM 6TH | Once again, ASU tied the game with a single homer by Lavette Tucker.
BOTTOM 7TH | The Rams stole the win from the Sharks in walk-fashion, as Mikiayah Harris singled to right field to score Keychelle Evans.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Schmoll was 3-for-4 with one RBI and one scored run.
- Van Gurp finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one scored run, while Lageyre was 2-for-4 and scored once.
- Starting pitcher Lexie Storrer took the loss, pitching the first 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
- Erica Winter entered for the next 1.0 inning, giving up one run on one hit, while Schmoll closed out the game, allowing up one hit.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- This was the first game of the season that the Sharks utilized three pitchers.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME TWO):
FINAL: Nova Southeastern Sharks 7 (W: M. Schmoll, 5-3), Albany State Rams 2 (L: L. Lowery, 1-10)
RECORDS: Nova Southeastern (12-10), Albany Sate (3-19)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOTTOM 1ST | Unlike the first game, it was the Rams who scored first, as the home team took advantage of RBI-singles by Jordynne Baranello and Jala Stewart to earn a 2-0 early edge.
TOP 3RD | With one out on the board and Lageyre on first, Van Gurp doubled to center to score Lageyre and cut ASU's lead to one, 2-1. After a passed ball allowed Van Gurp to advance to third and a walk drawn by Schmoll,
Aubry Hernandez tied the game 2-2 with an RBI-single to left, scoring Van Gurp.
TOP 5TH | NSU grabbed its first lead of the game as Van Gurp homered for a 3-2 edge.
TOP 6TH | It took just one at bat to get the NSU bats going, as
Alex Suzuki led the inning off with a solo homer for a 4-2 Shark lead. The next batter,
Megan Maloney, was hit by a pitch and then a single by
Keeley Mayers pushed her into scoring position. An RBI-double by Williams brought home Maloney, but the Rams were able to catch Mayers at third, leaving just one base runner. Not happy with just one home run this game, Van Gurp stepped up to the plate to send a two-run home run out of the park, giving Nova Southeastern a 7-2 lead, the eventual winning score.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Van Gurp was a perfect 4-for-4, recording four RBI and scoring twice with two homeruns and one double.
- Hernandez was also 4-for-4, adding one RBI, while Schmoll was 2-for-3 with one extra-base hit.
- Williams and Suzuki were both 1-for-4, both recording one RBI.
- Schmoll went the distance in the circle, picking up the win after allowing two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- This was the second game of the season where the Sharks recorded three home runs.

The Sharks will continue non-conference road action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Columbus State in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
